Migrating Evernote Notes to Markdown and PDF

Updated July 10, 2026

Evernote was once the undisputed king of note-taking. However, recent changes in pricing structures, device limits, and resource-heavy desktop clients have prompted many users to seek lighter, Markdown-based alternatives.

If you are looking to secure your notes in an open, future-proof format, migrating your Evernote notes to Markdown and converting them to clean PDFs is the ultimate solution. This guide details how to export your database and format your notes.

Step 1: Exporting Your Notes from Evernote

Evernote does not have a native Markdown export button. Instead, it exports databases in a proprietary format called .enex (Evernote XML).

To export your notes:

  1. Open the Evernote desktop application on your computer.
  2. Right-click the notebook you want to export.
  3. Click Export Notebook… from the dropdown menu.
  4. Select the ENEX format (.enex) and choose a filename.
  5. Click Export to save the file.

Repeat this process for each notebook you wish to migrate.

Step 2: Converting Evernote ENEX to Markdown

Since .enex is structured XML, you will need a migration tool to parse it into readable Markdown (.md) files. The most popular tool for this is Yarle (Yet Another Rope Ladder for Evernote).

Using Yarle to convert your files:

  1. Download and install Yarle on your desktop.
  2. Select your exported .enex file as the input.
  3. Choose an output directory where your Markdown files will be saved.
  4. In the configuration options, choose:
    • Markdown format: CommonMark or Obsidian-style links.
    • Resource folder: This extracts embedded images and files into a local folder.
  5. Click Convert. Yarle will rebuild your entire Evernote library as clean Markdown text files.

Step 3: Cleaning Up the Markdown Text

Evernote formatting is highly customized, which can lead to some styling artifacts in the converted Markdown:

  • Nested HTML Tables: Evernote’s complex tables might turn into messy HTML tags rather than standard Markdown tables.
  • Inline CSS Styles: Clean up any residual HTML <span> or <font> tags.
  • Fix Missing Image Paths: Ensure the converted files reference your extracted assets folder.

Step 4: Exporting Your Migrated Notes to PDF

Once your Evernote notes are converted to clean Markdown, you can easily read them in any editor. When you need to print a note or share it as a clean document, you can convert it using MarkdownToFile.com.

  1. Copy the text of your migrated Markdown note.
  2. Open MarkdownToFile.com and paste the note into the editor workspace.
  3. Apply a clean, modern layout like the Academic or Clean theme.
  4. Preview the document in the interactive visual layout window to verify headings (H1, H2) and table alignments.
  5. Click Download PDF to export your new, highly search-optimized vector PDF.
